- Go back to Settings and tap General > Transfer or Reset [device] > Erase All Content and Settings. If asked for your device passcode or Restrictions passcode, enter it. Then tap Erase [device].
Use "Erase All Content" and "Settings" to quickly and securely erase all settings, data, and apps, while maintaining the operating system currently installed. This guide is only for Monterey or later. Older versions of Mac OS must be reset from the boot menu.
Use Erase All Content and Settings
This feature requires macOS Monterey or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip. Learn what to do if you can't use Erase All Content and Settings.
macOS Ventura or later
- From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings.
- Click General in the sidebar.
- Click Transfer or Reset on the right.
- Click Erase All Content and Settings.
macOS Monterey
- From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose System Preferences.

Follow the onscreen instructions to erase your Mac and restore it to factory settings. Before the erase begins, you will see a summary of all the settings, media, data, and other items that will be erased or turned off.
- When asked to sign in with your administrator credentials, enter the password that you use to log in to your Mac.
- You might be asked to enter your Apple ID password so that your Mac can sign out of Find My.
- You might be asked if you want to back up your Mac before resetting it. If you want to do that, you can open Time Machine and back up to an external storage device.
- Finally, you will be asked to click Erase All Content & Settings to confirm that you want to proceed.
- Your Mac then restarts and briefly shows a black screen or progress bar.
- If your Mac needs to reconnect to a Bluetooth accessory such as a keyboard or mouse, you might be asked to turn on the accessory. If the accessory doesn't connect within 30 seconds, turn the accessory off and back on. When reconnecting to a Bluetooth keyboard, you're asked to choose a language.
- You might be asked to select a Wi-Fi network or attach a network cable. To select a Wi-Fi network, use the Wi-Fi menu in the upper-right corner of the screen.
- Your Mac then activates.
- Click Restart.
After your Mac restarts, a setup assistant guides you through the setup process, as if you're setting up your Mac for the first time.
Do not go through the setup process. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until it turns off.
- Backup your files. If you don't have a current backup, you should back up your files to an external storage device.

Sign out of iTunes. (From the menu bar in iTunes, choose Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer. Enter your Apple ID and password and click Deauthorize.) If using macOS Catalina or later, you can skip this step.

If your Mac is paired with a Bluetooth keyboard, mouse, or other device that you plan to keep, you can unpair it. This optional step prevents accidental input when the Mac and device have separate owners but remain in Bluetooth range.
If you do this on a Mac that doesn't have a built-in keyboard or trackpad, you will need to plug in a USB keyboard and mouse to complete the remaining steps.
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings (or System Preferences).
- Click Bluetooth.
- Move your pointer over the device that you want to unpair, then click the Disconnect button or remove button (x) next to the device name.
6. Erase your Mac
-
Start up from macOS Recovery: Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these two keys until you see an Apple logo or other image: Command (⌘) and R.
-
If asked, select a user you know the password for, then enter their administrator password.
-
From the utilities window, select Disk Utility and click Continue.
-
Select Macintosh HD in the sidebar of Disk Utility.
-
Click the Erase button in the toolbar, then enter the requested details:
-
Name: Macintosh HD
-
Format: APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled), as recommended by Disk Utility
-
-
Click Erase Volume Group. If this button isn't shown, click Erase instead.
-
If asked, enter your Apple ID.
-
If you previously used Disk Utility to add internal volumes other than Macintosh HD, erase them individually using the same process.
-
-
When done, quit Disk Utility to return to the utilities window.
7. Reinstall macOS
When you see a window with the option to reinstall macOS, your Mac has started up from Recovery.
- Select the option to reinstall macOS.*
- Click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.
- If the installer asks to unlock your disk, enter the password that you use to log in to your Mac.
- If the installer offers the choice between installing on Macintosh HD or Macintosh HD - Data, choose Macintosh HD.
- If the installer doesn't see your disk, or it says that it can't install on your computer or volume, you might need to erase your disk first.
- Allow installation to complete without putting your Mac to sleep or closing its lid. Your Mac might restart and show a progress bar several times, and the screen might be empty for minutes at a time.
- After reinstalling macOS, your Mac restarts to a setup assistant. Press Command-Q to shut down instead of continuing setup.
8. Reset NVRAM
If you're not using a Mac with Apple silicon, you're using an Intel-based Mac and you will need to reset the NVRAM.
- Shut down your Mac.
- Turn on your Mac, then immediately press and hold these four keys together: Option, Command, P, R.
- Release the keys after about 20 seconds, during which your Mac might appear to restart. For example, you might hear a startup sound more than once, or see the Apple logo more than once.
- After resetting NVRAM, your Mac restarts to a setup assistant. Press Command-Q to shut down instead of continuing setup.
